Park – Life – The Story So Far
Magic is made when people work together.
From Dilapidated to Dynamic: The transformation of Dunnikier Country Park, Have you taken a stroll through Dunnikier Country Park in Kirkcaldy lately? If so, you’ve likely noticed a massive wave of fresh energy, vibrant green spaces, and a bustling, inclusive new play area, but It hasn’t always been this way. Just a few short years ago, the park was heavily underutilised, neglected and desperately in need of some love.
Dunnikier Country Park Development Group was born: A powerful reminder of what happens when passionate locals decide to take matters into their own hands. Founded in late 2022 by residents Stephen MacCrimmon and Gary Meldrum, this volunteer-led group miraculously secured over £250,000 to systematically revitalise the park. Here is the inspiring story of how they turned a community dream into a reality and a sneak peek at what’s coming next!
Timeline:
2022: The Spark of Inception: It all started with a simple conversation over a couple of pints of Tennent’s between Stephen and Gary about the rundown state of the park. By August 2022, Dunnikier Country Park Development Group was officially founded. They quickly engaged with local stakeholders and Fife Council, gaining critical guidance from Clair Lovett to navigate the complex world of funding.
The momentum truly shifted with a generous £2,500 donation from Templehall Gym, a small catalyst that legally unlocked a massive £50,000 grant from the Fife Environment Trust.
2023: Ambitious Planning & Community Voice: Within just eight months, the group had raised an astonishing £150,000, setting their sights on a £250,000 target to completely overhaul the play park. They launched community surveys to ensure the public had a say, and an overwhelming majority of respondents voted in favour of a new play area. By November, the old, dilapidated play park was removed, indicating the group’s intent and potential designs for an inclusive, accessible park were revealed.
2024: The Big Build & Grand Opening: August 2024 marked the official groundbreaking, with playground specialists Kompan bringing the inclusive designs to life. By October—exactly two years after the project’s inception—the brand-new play park officially opened, complete with adaptive swings, a wheelchair-accessible roundabout and lots more.
Simultaneously, the group went all-in on biodiversity, planting new orchards and hundreds of native trees with the help of the Woodland Trust, Climate Action Fife and Fife Coast & Countryside Trust, alongside launching popular Halloween and Easter annual community events.
Work did not stop there; BAM Construction donated a shipping container configured to serve as a sustainable tool hub. And a future rainwater harvesting facility
2025: Boosting Wellbeing & Sustainability: The group shifted focus toward relaxation and sustainability. They planted silver birch, Sakura cherry blossom trees, hundreds of woodland saplings as well as over 15,000 bee pollen mixed bulbs.
Then came the development of a brand-new sensory garden near the Oswald hotel area of the park. Work also continued at the play park as local business W Mathew and Son upgraded the main access path, making it accessible for all, there was also the welcomed addition of another two benches inside the park confines, and with help from Fife Council three wheel chair accessible picnic benches were donated and installed close by giving families a place to relax and watch over the kids as they play.
Oswald Sensory Garden: A crowd funder also saw the core 4 completing a gruelling “500 Miles year-long Challenge” walking fundraiser, conquering the mighty Ben Nevis on route and finishing of celebrating their victory at the Linton Lane Centre, to top the challenge off and failing to get some famous company to walk with the group and sing 500miles was a surprise well wish from the one and only Proclaimers. The main funding for the sensory garden was obtained from the Fife Council You Decide fund, with the project voted for by members of the public, indicating that this was something that would be welcomed in the town.
2026: A Vision Fulfilled: In April 2026, the spectacular Oswald Sensory Garden officially opened, featuring wheelchair-accessible planters and interactive sensory items. A stunning nature-themed mural was also commissioned by the amazingly talented local artist Kerry Wilson.
Partnerships were also established along the way, highlighting that collaboration is key to the success of the town. Breathing Space & NHS 24 were also fully onboard helping the group bring the 3rd bench to the town of Kirkcaldy with the bench taking centre stage inside the sensory garden with a beautiful view over the Firth of Forth. The Breathing Space project provides the community with a simple piece of infrastructure with a vital purpose, to let people know they are not alone and that a safe space to breathe and talk is always within reach. Another welcome addition to the garden was the visit of the Pit Car a amazing project showcasing designs by local artists based on the famous wemyss ware cat.
A Network of Local Partners: The rapid transformation of Dunnikier Country Park is a masterclass in community collaboration. The group has stitched together an incredible network of partners that have undoubtedly helped with the groups succes.
Looking ahead: Lots more ideas, plans, projects and future collaborations are already in advanced talks, with the plans for a new physical and interactive trail well underway. There is also exciting plans to expand on the recently planted cherry blossom trees, hoping to create a stunning cherry blossom avenue.
Opening up various other exciting opportunities to develop other underutilised areas of the park.
The Dunnikier Country Park Development Group has shown exactly what a community can achieve with clear vision, strong partnerships, and relentless drive.
